Community Work

Community Halls cum Schools, 2006 - The Foundation helped reconstruct two community halls, razed to the ground by the deluge that hit Surat in 2006. These halls were used by NGO's to impart education to the underprivileged children of the slum-dwellers.

Earthquake, 2001 - Our rehabilitation centre offered shelter to 1800 victims and food to more than 50000 victims for two months post Gujarat Earthquake in 2002. The foundation also reconstructed 39 schools in Dhrangadhara, Surendranagar after earthquake annihilation.

Volunteer

The focus of the Foundation's activities is on Education. But we have not restricted ourselves to just a school. We have expanded our activities to the community with the focus on children. Whether it was the children affected by the earthquake in Gujarat, the future of underprivileged children in our state, the plight of children in areas ravaged by Tsunami, or the future of children with learning Disabilities, Calorx reached out to them all. And along the way, we have received help from countless volunteers, who believed in the cause.

Operation smile

  • Welcome to Calorx Education & Research FoundationOperation Smile
  • Welcome to Calorx Education & Research FoundationOperation Smile

mon Calorx Global School took up the initiative to create smile across the faces of young children. Our school is a part of the operation smile project. Operation smile is an international children's medical charity that heals children's smiles, forever changing their lives.

Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft and it is difficult for them to socialize, eat, speak and smile. Everywhere around the world, there are cases when the parents can' t afford cleft surgeries and that is when Operation Smile comes into the picture. The website link is http://www.cois.edu.in/. It provides with the much needed surgical services and much needed doctors to help bring a smile upon their faces.

At our school we send student volunteers along with teachers to the program. Our students work as volunteers and intend on working as volunteers to make ends meet and at the end bring smiles.

At the program the students comfort the families of the patient and answer their questions which create a warm environment. Also our students have painted the patient rooms so that the child feels comfortable staying at the hospital. Thus the hospital won't feel like a hospital for the kids. Meanwhile some students work on creating 'goody bags'. Goody bags are paper bags which carry the basic amenities that the patient would require after their operation. The students create the bag by themselves and the bags include amenities like a towel, toothbrush and toothpaste. Apart from working the students bring T shirt's which are used in creating operation gowns for the patients. The process is pretty simple, the students select a T-shirt that is slightly longer than the child and create a gown out of it.

Along with creating gowns and goody bags, our students have been assisting the doctors during surgery where they get to observe the surgery very closely and the students have also been filling out the patient charts.

The volunteers have been working hard to create a difference.

Riya had been working to bring this show together, since last two months. She organized everything right from the choreography, costumes, booking the venue to going and talking to the sponsors, and she says though it was not easy but the entire journey has helped her evolve as a well rounded person.

The students brought out awareness rally from Law Garden to Sardar Patel Stadium in the city. Holding up placards and banners they prompted people to vote. The message conveyed to the adult population of the state was to exercise their franchise in the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections.

Chairperson of Calorx Foundation Manjula Pooja Shroff
"While Gujarat has always seen fair voter turn-outs, it is alarming to see the educated urban voter adopt a laissez-faire attitude towards elections. These voters are well equipped to make an informed and enlightened choice and yet act lazy. The campaign is an initiative by Calorx to make children, the future citizens of our country, take the lead for the cause of democracy."

The foundation wants this campaign to change the sensibilities of many who will eventually realize the impact of their individual votes with the credit for the change going to children. The students also went for a door to door campaign at nearby residential society and urged people to vote. They explained to people why it is important to vote and why they should vote. They asked the people of the society to sign a pledge and also reminded them on the day of the election to go and vote. Students and teachers also visited Shilaj Village and Kalhar Bungalows to speak to the residence about the importance of their vote.

2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti, a day looked forward to in the calendar as a holiday was equally awaited by the staff and students of DPS, Bopal for an altogether different reason. While the city stretched to a lazy cup of tea and newspaper, the DPS team (students, parents, staff and support staff) armored with masks, gloves and brooms gave a kick start to the day.

The morning began with a hectic activity at Vastrapur Lake. Excitement and enthusiasm filled the air and bhajans playing all along elevated the fervour and spirit. Present to participate enthusiastically in the Cleanliness drive organized by DPS, Bopal were Mr. Ashwin Upadhyay, Bodakdev head, Primary Health Center, Dr. Makwana, Deputy Health Officer and Mr. P B Desai, Deputy Municipal Commissioner. Mr. P B Desai addressed the students and motivated them to consciously practice 'cleanliness'. He even reminded them of the rhyme they learn as toddlers – Bits of paper…… pick them up, pick them up! Greatly inspired the students present pledged to keep the city clean and green and pass on the message to at least 10 more to do their bit.

The action packed morning saw the team spruce up the Sardar Center at Vastrapur. The open space all around littered with plastic, wrappers, polythene, tobacco pouches, water pouches was cleaned. Garbage was collected and put in bins. Garbage around the bins was also picked. The busy road had many drop their jaws in surprise to see these young activists in action. The team then moved to the garden space around the lake. The entire walking track was cleared of all the packets and pouches lying around. The bhajans playing all along did not let the sun, dust or heat dampen or wilt the enthusiasm of the participants. Ms Neera Pandey, vice principal, DPS, Bopal, Ms Sangeeta Srivastava and Mr Nirav Vasavda, cleanliness drive in charges, the teaching and non teaching staff, the sports department and the support staff of the school whole heartedly participated in the drive. To set an example Ms Sangeeta Kain, principal, DPS, Bopal not only participated enthusiastically in the drive but interacted with each student and inspired them to volunteer to shoulder their responsibilities towards the society and nation.

Each one who was a part could be seen transformed into a Gandhi himself following what Gandhiji practiced and professed. Remembering the great man on this day couldn't have been more meaningful!
